Combat Style Refinements & March Marketplace Drop

The Week Ahead:

  • Player Avatar

    • The Player Avatar topic will be a first look at the task that we're faced with when working with the Player Avatar. We're aiming to get this blog out to you towards the end of this week.
  • Havenhythe Preview

    • For the Havenhythe Preview, we'll be looking a little more behind the scenes as to what you can expect in our biggest area expansion yet in our latest Dev Diary! You can look forward to this towards the end of the week!

In Case You Missed It

  • Last week we released our Combat Modernisation Update - we issued a few fixes for some newly cropped up combat related bugs, and the Combat JMod team was present in many of the discussions that unfolded around Combat. To list all their contributions here would make this too long, but we hope you spotted them in the threads you were engaged in.
  • We also also shared our Aura Overhaul Design Update on Wednesday, which presented how we had taken your feedback on board as well as our latest thinking for the overhaul.
  • Finally, on Friday we revealed that the first Remastered Content update will be for the Dungeoneering Skill. Read all about that here!

  • Combat Style Modernisation Follow Up
    Lets Chat Combat

Last week we launched the Combat Style Modernisation, an extensive update aimed at making our combat more welcoming, understandable, and satisfying from the outset, while still preserving the space for optimisation, skill expression, and high-level strategy.

We shot high with a lot of changes and have been closely monitoring this update now that it is in the hands of players from all walks of life. This week we are introducing some refinements to a few different areas that we saw crop up over the week. We'll be continuing to monitor changes.

Dev Note - from Mods Sponge, Reaper and Pigeon

First and foremost, we want to thank everybody that took part in the beta and who came along for the journey, your feedback was invaluable to us. Now it's in the hands of everybody, it's been amazing watching everybody enjoy the three modernised styles.

On a different note - we have some interesting data we want to share with you around style usage across the four styles.

We've seen Magic, Melee and Ranged have a sharp uptick in usage (while Range looks small; it's overall percentage increase is mighty!), mostly with which style people are taking bosses. Outside of bossing, Melee and Magic have had changes to increase the potential of their Area of Effect (AoE) attacks, namely Hurricane around multiple targets, and Magics better utilisation of Blood spells for continuous healing against multiple targets, whereas Ranged has always had a lot of AoE through weapons such as Mechanised Chinchompas, causing it to see less change.

    Proportional Boss Kills by Style

Style February 23rd (Previous Monday) March 2nd (Release Day) Percentage change
    Necromancy 60% 37% 38% decrease
    Magic 17% 22% 29% increase
    Melee 16% 27% 68% increase
    Ranged 7% 13% 85% increase
    Proportional All Kills by Style

Style February 23rd (Previous Monday) March 2nd (Release Day) Percentage change
    Necromancy 34% 26% 23% decrease
    Magic 22% 24% 9% increase
    Melee 28% 32% 14% increase
    Ranged 15% 15% ~0% change

    Equilibrium Invention Perk

This week we are introducing a new(ish) invention perk, Equilibrium, which will be available in both weapon and armour slots.

    • Ability damage is increased by 10%, plus an additional 1% per rank, but prevents critically striking. (Cannot critically strike for 30s after unequipping this perk).
      • (11% at rank 1, 14% at rank 4)

We think Equilibrium slotting in at 14% damage will realign and add some extra power to late game Necromancy in combination with the small changes we made last week. We will continue to monitor the style and its performance.

This perk will come from a new component

    Ecliptic components

You receive a burst of inspiration! A new invention component has been discovered.

Ecliptic components are a new invention component requiring 92 Invention to research.

They can be obtained by disassembling the following items:

    • Roar of Awakening - 1 x component
    • Ode to Deceit - 1 x component
    • Khopesh of Tumeken - 1 x component
    • Khopesh of Elidinis - 1 x component
    • Devourer's Guard - 1 x component
    • Tumeken's resplendence equipment - 1 x component
    • Tumeken's Light - 2 x components

As per normal an Augmented item at level 9+ grants 4 x the components

    Ranged

We're pretty happy with where ranged sits, but ammo still stands out as a kicker, we're making it a little more friendly to interact with broadly.

    • Wen arrows have had their damage and accuracy bonuses increased back from 25% → 30%
    • The Caroming perk has had its damage increased from 2.5% per rank → 4% per rank.
    • Made some changes to ammo:
      • Default ammo break chance 20% → 15%
      • Almost all ammo now follows a default break chance.
        • E.G. Chinchompas will now only be destroyed 15% of the time instead of 100%
          • (think of it as them just being stunned.)
      • Some ammos will now auto retrieve without Ava's in cases where it would be odd for them to drop.
        • E.g. Hand cannon shots, Bolt racks would feel odd to see appear beneath a target, and so will remain in the ammo slot until you fail a break chance.
          • (think of it as these ammos having a number of uses before they run out)
      • Completion of animal magnetism & Ava's devices no longer have a 10% chance to fail picking up ammo.

    Melee

We're happy with how much you've enjoyed Melee this week. With this in mind, we've noticed that Melee has been overperforming in fully 'AFK' revolution bars and in the top end of pvm, in comparison to other styles.

We've made a few small, targeted changes to bring it more in line with the other styles, while keeping the gameplay identical. We'll continue to monitor for any necessary changes.

    • Assault
      • 160% AVG → 140% AVG
    • Bloodlust Assault
      • 200% AVG → 180% AVG
    • Overpower
      • 575% AVG → 545% AVG
    • Overpower with Igneous Cape
      • 340% AVG per hit → 310% per hit
    • Dismember
      • Heals 10% of damage → Heals 4% of damage
    • Slaughter
      • 100% every 1.8s → 90% every 1.8s
      • Heals 10% of damage → Heals 6% of damage
    • Massacre
      • 120% every 2.4s → 100% every 2.4s
      • Heals 10% of damage → Heals 12% of damage
    • Flurry
      • 70% AVG → 65% AVG

    Magic

We love how players have been utilising Magic, and the interesting combo's that it creates. However, the recent changes to Runic Charge and Concentrated Blast has led the very top end of Magic to become a little out of control. As a result we're making some changes to Fractured Staff of Armadyl and the Tumekens Resplendence gear to bring it back under control, without affecting the mid game of magic.

We want to make it clear, that we're not interested in 'gutting' either of these items, nor changing the playstyle of magic. But, the combination of items is largely eating into the overall power budget of magic. We will continue monitoring Magic and make any changes necessary.

    Fractured Staff of Armadyl

    • Special Attack: Lightning Surge damage 100% AVG → 80% AVG
    • Passive: Critical strike damage bonus 22.5% AVG → 20% AVG

    Tumeken's Resplendence

    • Asphyxiate damage percentage 75% → 65% AVG
    • Critical strike damage bonus 50% → 35%

    Other

    • A number of magic animations have been converted to our new animation system, which should mitigate 'popping' and issues with VFX becoming detached from equipment.
    • Rune consumption rate has been changed from 20% → 15%

    Additional Changes

We noticed the formula for damage bonus on equipment wasn't being adhered to at later levels (and you may have too!) So we've cleaned up the formula so it's consistent throughout levels.

    • You shouldn't notice any significant change as some armour values have come down slightly above tier 92, but these have been offset by tertiary equipment such as jewellery, pocket slots etc having generally increased values.

We've adjusted the rates of rare items in Sanctum of Rebirth, with the new component adding a sink to Sanctum's weapons, we believe this a good time to adjust some drop rates and try to let the 'Roar of Awakening' and 'Ode to Deceit' recover some price.

Additionally a few commons had become a bit too plentiful, so we're swapping them out for more used commons to allow the prices to recover.

    • Weapons Drop Table
      • Normal Mode 1/50 → 1/75
      • Hard Mode 1/40 → 1/60
    • Prayer & Scripture Drop Table
      • Normal Mode 1/90 → 1/125
      • Hard Mode 1/80 → 1/100
    • Shard of Genesis Essence
      • Hard Mode 1/80 → 1/75
    • 'Commons Changes'
      • Molton Glass → Extreme Necromancy 1 dose (3-6)
      • Water Orb → Fellstalk Seed (1-3)

    Bug Fixes

    • Snap Shot and Rapid Fire have had their skill guide entries capitalised.
    • Players can no longer scroll in the Melee and Defence ability books when using Classic Interface Mode.
    • Massacre has been correctly made available to F2P players
    • Resolved an issue with Book of Wisdom/Illuminated Book of Wisdom showing the wrong information.
    • Bombardment no longer goes on cooldown after being used.

    • Ice Strykewyrms can now be damaged using the Combust & Corruption Blast abilities.
    • Blast diffusion boots now correctly apply the blast infused effect to buff basic attacks.
    • The UI tutorial for Greater Sonic Wave has been corrected and will no longer show Asphyxiate when unlocked
    • Resolved an issue with chain not working as intended in multi way PvP

    Future Changes

The team are continuing to look into improvements, namely 'Moveable Death's Swiftness'. Since The World Wakes, Ranged has had very static movement during combat, being forced to stay within your Deaths Swiftness. To better support the fantasy of being a fast and agile Ranger, peppering your target with arrows, bolts, and other ammo - we're turning Death's Swiftness into a self buff, allowing you to freely move while active.

With this, we're making some changes to the animation to ensure the effect feels appropriate when moving around. Please note, the below are a work in progress.

    Baseline Death's Swiftness
    Fungal Death's Swiftness
    Chaotic Death's Swiftness
    Azure Death's Swiftness
